Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission in powerful high-redshift radio galaxies
We present the mid-infrared (IR) spectra of seven of the most powerful radio-galaxies known to exist at 1.5< z< 2.6. The radio emission of these sources is dominated by the AGN with 500 MHz luminosities in the range 1027.8–1029.1 W Hz−1. The AGN signature is clearly evident in the mid-IR spectra; however, we also detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission, indicative of prodigious star for...
متن کاملGas outflows in radio galaxies
We present a summary of our recent results on gas outflows in radio galaxies. Fast outflows (up to 2000 km s−1) have been detected both in ionized and neutral gas. The latter is particularly surprising as it shows that, despite the extremely energetic phenomena occurring near an AGN, some of the outflowing gas remains, or becomes again, neutral. These results are giving new and important insigh...
متن کاملThe Early History of Powerful Radio Galaxies
I briefly review the current status of observations of AGN-powered UV/optical light, starlight, dust and outflow phenomena in high-redshift powerful radio galaxies. The existing data are consistent with the hypothesis that powerful radio galaxies undergo a major episode of star formation at high redshift (z ∼ > 4) during which they form most of their stars, and subsequently evolve ‘passively’, ...
متن کاملAO Observations of Three Powerful Radio Galaxies
The host galaxies of powerful radio sources are ideal laboratories to study active galactic nuclei (AGN). The galaxies themselves are among the most massive systems in the universe, and are believed to harbor supermassive black holes (SMBH). If large galaxies are formed in a hierarchical way by multiple merger events, radio galaxies at low redshift represent the end-products of this process. Ho...
متن کاملDust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies
This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...
